Tromsø to Harstad/Narvik

Harstad - Narvik

The municipality of Harstad comprises a number of islands in South Troms. Most of the municipality is located on Hinnøya, which is Norway's largest island.  The church has a small branch there.  On Dad's First Mission Narvik was the larger city and the branch was located there, about an hour drive away.

Narvik
What used to be Norway's largest Northern city it has been declining in recent decades.  Major port for iron ore shipping and the railway connected it to Southern Norway, Sweden & Finland.  The Battle of Narvik 1940 made it the most well known city of Norway in the world.  It is probably one of the nations largest shipyard cemetary.

Final leg of our trip - delivering tires to Harstad elders.  Maybe the most difficult only in that Dad contracted the flu on Easter Sunday and was sick for the two days prior to leaving and Mom followed up with the same the second half of our trip home and the next few days.

The kings highway

Many bridges from island to island.

Warmer down south of us ...less snow.

coming into town.

Harstad Harbour

Elder Garlick and Elder Dansie.

heading back across the bride on the way home.

We stopped along the way to see an old Sami village.

Sign to tell you how far away in Sami - so we could not understand it.

Old dirt houses and teepees.

Door into a dirt house.

We did not hike the whole way because of the snow, and because the historical site was closed for the season will open in June.

on the road back, but decided to take another detour side trip to Narvik, since it is light until late in the evening.

lots of waterfalls along the roadside.

oops!  The Narvik bridge is under some construction so it really will be a detour as we take a small country road around to come into the town, about 1/2 hour delay.

back out of town the same way we came in on the side country road instead of the main one.

Church in Narvik - we drove there on our way back.

Big Moose danger...We have not seen a moose, except at the zoo.  One would think with all the travel and driving we would have but...we travel during the light hours most of the time and they travel more in the dark.
