Syttende Mai - Tromsø

GRUNLOVSDAG

[CONSTITUTION DAY]
IN TROMSØ

Official flag day - celebrated with children's parades and marching bands...children are allowed to eat all the ice cream and hot dogs (sausages) they want on this day...in other words a big party day.

One difference...almost everyone dresses in their native attire or sunday best dress, no shorts and t-shirts.

Ingeborg & Anton were out to enjoy the parade

Juvy out enjoying the festivities

Elders Pepe & Moll were with us throughout the day to enjoy their first syttende mai

National flag day - many of the participants and observers love carrying/wearing a flag or symbol thereof.  Norwegians are a very patriotic people

ready to start the days activities and prepared with a picnic lunch for the long day of celebration ahead

Bumped into some of our favorite people - Janne & Family

Melita, Chris Erno, Patrik, Janne & Erno

Mom waiting for the festivities to begin with one of our favorite little ladies in town

cotton candy is a favorite of the children and adults

With a shout of
"Hip-Hip_Hoorah!"...Let the parades begin...The Children's school parade..The Barnehage parade...The Folk parade...

"Ja, Vi elske dette landet"

Everyone gathered at the High School to begin the parade, we waited on the gågate by the Torv for it to come around to us to view

Waiting fir the festivities to begin.

A little sidewalk entertainment between parades.

due to the colder day many wore the native frocks/shawls over the bunad dresses.

People lining the streets waiting for the afternoon folk parade to begin in the afternoon

lots of entertainment by the various club groups

The afternoon parade has all the clubs such as Skiing, dancing, gymnastics, cheer, soccer, etc. , also some of the buttiks (business/stores)

field hockey

Swing Club

Car Club

It was nice that Olaf could also join in the festivities

Karate club

cycling club

another dance club

gymnastics club performing - ready to do a flip

Lots of school & community marching bands....if you went to school there even if your in your 60s you can still be part of school marching band.

belly dance club

crowds throng the streets for the parades...we didn't get to go by the castle and wave to the king and royal family...anyone in the parade in Oslo has that opportunity.

all the homes decorate patriotically - flags are flying everywhere

Ready to taste the the flavor of the syttende mai

another art wall on the side of the building

The Aquarium was open for free visits 17th of Mai so we had to pay a visit

Even the seals got caught up in the celebrations and had to carry the flag

a little kiss

rolling off the ice back into the pool

Even though the Finmark Elders Baird & Sobotka were not with us in Tromsø but in Alta for the festivities, they said they also had a good time celebrating

Geir & Elder Sobotka in Alta

Some of our favorite people enjoying some cotton candy

had to add a picture of our friends the Rustad's children celebrating the day this year in Kristiansand....brings back memories of our first syttende mai
Ruse...Norway's crazy high school tradition..lasts a month and their activities usually get way too carried away to the point of obnoxious at times...but they love having fun.

the day wouldn't be complete without coming home to enjoy bbq polser (sausages/hot dogs)

..and another 17th of mai sails from our view... but will forever linger in our memory.
