On The Road Again...Tromsø to Alta...and back again

Dad's last area on his first mission was in Alta-Hammerfest.   Dad told Mom he would bring her to Norway after they were married for 7 years...that was hopefully the plan after schooling, etc.  Plans changed...we never made it until this mission...instead of a two week vacation, she got to spend 2 years.   Loved being able to show her where I served and the beauty of the country.
all thanks for this trip go to Eldste Baughan and Eldste Parrish who forgot to bring the summer tires for the car that was in Alta and was being to transfered to Harstad...We were the beneficiaries of seeing Finmark a little closer up.  Someone had to volunteer to go fetch them and get them to the Elders in Harstad.

Heading a bit farther north than we are, about a 6 hour drive

Road trip up  6 hours north

Taking pictures while we waited for the first of two ferries we needed to take.

Breivikeidet is just north of Tromsø golf course.

Elder Sobotoka and Baird were our traveling companions..

Here comes the ferry.

in line waiting to board

Ready to drive on board.

a half hour ride on the ferry with beautiful views

off the ferry and traveling to Lyngseidet to catch the 2nd ferry of our trip.  About 1/2 drive with lots of beautiful scenery

There were some amazing landscapes along the way, thanks to a bright sunny day.  the reflections made it look like you were looking down into a deep hole

Love the reflection.

always a church in each town.  This is the Lyngseidet chapel

this is the second ferry.

Who knew Santa would be on shore watching the ferry come and go...needs to spend his time relaxing and soaking up some sun after a busy Christmas season I guess

Views from the Ferry again were magnificent.  This time an hour ferry ride

That's the mainland where we are going, we have been traveling on islands all the way so far.

hoping to get a kommune pin...it was closed, due to holiday weekend.

Docked at Olderdalen and began our drive on the mainland now to Alta

beautiful frozen waterfalls in a few more weeks they will begin to flow with the sun up all day now.

one of many tunnels.

Hold your breath.  Harder than you think..some tunnels are up to 26 km long.

Storslett - small town along the way

Cod drying by the road.  Some fisherman has been busy.  Spring is when they begin the harvest

a net covers the racks to keep the bird away.

heading more inland now instead of following the coast lines.  The snow gets deeper as we travel

Going farther north ...more snow.

a stop for pictures.

highest point along the way (for the road, not the mountain peaks).  The mountains look bigger since they come right up out of the fjords which are at sea level

very few trees up here.

Companions at the MTC and again up in the north.

a little spring thaw starting to occur in some places.

another salmon farming station.

Warning moose and reindeer in the same area.  Only time we have seen both signs together

another cute old church across the fjord.

Nap time...not really too much beautiful scenery to look at and it's a once in a lifetime trip.

Signs are now in three languages...Norwegian Sami, and Finnish.

We wish we would have had time to see inside all the old community churches along the way.

fun bridge at Kåfjord.

Welcome to the northern lights city - Alta

We have arrived

Funky boat sculpture on the side of a building in town.

Our hotel where we stayed.  Scandic Alta

Alta Kirke

Another bridge on north end of town, getting closer to Dad's old apartment

Kristian and Linnea's house

This is where Dad lived on his first mission.  It has been added onto, so a little larger now.

The pond where Dad used to gather duck eggs for breakfast.

The dog kennel...for dog sledding.

little cabin out back has been added...place to sit and relax on the pond

The original home is just the left portion of the home

Where the mink cages used to be "back in the day."

road Dad used to walk up and down from the farm home to go tracting

heading back into town to check in at our hotel

sign outside the hotel we stayed in.

You can tell where you are from almost major city in world
