Arizona in Norway Part III - Sami Reindyr adventures - Fjord Horses - Oldervik

The reindeer, also known as caribou in North America, but generally referred to as reindyr in Norway, is a species of deer with circumpolar distribution native to the Arctic, the Subarctic and some alpine areas. There are several sub-species of reindeer with variations in size, color and antler appearance. Arctic reindeer are often tolerant of people. Reindeer’s reaction to human presence varies depending on how we move, our speed, direction, noise, etc. Reindeer – especially young animals – are often inquisitive and curious when encountering humans – particularly when they have the wind behind them and cannot identify your smell...but they are still wild and one needs to be careful around them.

The Sami people at the reindeer camp.

Inside the Lauva, a tent like structure.

They explain about their history and way of life.

Reindeer hitched up to the sleds and ready to take us for a ride.

Bundled up an ready to go

only one horn...must have been in a fight.   Little known fact we learned.  All Reindyr grow horns.  Females have the horns in the Springtime and Males have them in the Fall.   Makes sense if you really think about it.

A little colder, cloudier day than our dog sled ride, but we didn't travel as fast so it was fine.
