Alta to Kautokeino

Kautokeino

The 9,707-square-kilometre (3,748 sq mi) municipality is the largest by area out of the 422 municipalities in Norway. Kautokeino (Guovdageaidnu (sami name)) a population of about 3,000, is one of two cultural centers of Northern Sápmi (Sami) today (other being Kárášjohka-Karasjok). The most significant industries are reindeer herding, theatre/movie industry, and the public education system.

This is the 2nd leg of our journey...We arrived in Alta around 3p, checked in and dropped off Elders luggage quickly and headed to Kautokeino a three hour drive to southeast to visit a single sister living there....we had a 6:30 appointment for dinner...that meant we would not arrive back in Alta until almost midnight but she had not had missionaries visit for months now.

Refraction of sunlight caused by ice crystals in the atmosphere. Called a Parhelion or Sun dog. typically appears as a pair of subtly colored patches of light, around 22° to the left and right of the Sun, and at the same altitude above the horizon as the Sun. They can be seen anywhere in the world during any season, but are not always obvious or bright. Sun dogs are best seen and most conspicuous when the Sun is near the horizon.  Here is one from Kautokeino a few weeks before we came to visit.  Sometimes they will form an arch connecting all three.  Pretty cool - Thanks to Stina for the photo.
