Setesdal - A Day with the Rønnings

SETESDAL - old farming region of South Central Norway north of Kristiansand

colors & shapes of the rocks allows you to use your imagination to sometimes see things that may not really be, but it is fun - white top rock looks like a reindeer to me

Rønnings cabin - on a little lake - nice way to cool off in the hot summer heat back in town

lake view from the cabin

Tom & Turid

100 year old ferry - 2 hour rides up & down the fjord

views inside the ferry - we got a personal tour

It is a steam engine ferry - have to burn the wood to drive it along

Turid

Next stop was Eventyrbekken (mineral park) - lots of minerals and lots of fun family activities

loved this troll

The "Three Billy Goats Gruff" with the Troll under the bridge.

Why not play a live game of chess?  You can actually play & move the giant pieces around

Setesdal is famous for it's old farm homes with grass roofs

the wood stacked under a shelter is a common sight - it is the only way to heat the cabins and homes in the area.  If you don't work and have a large supply ready for winter you will be cold

Next stop was a Silversmith shop - family owned and operated for generations and hundreds of years now. It has been converted into a hotell but still has the silversmith operation on the one level.

rosmaling is very common in this area of Norway - Telemark & Agder

back at the mineral park - sculpture depicting one chipping away to find the stone gems in the rocks

came across this old home and had to explore it - no one was home but the inside was amazing - must be a museum of some sort - would have been nice to know more - we were there about half an hour but no one ever came around

wouldn't be an adventure without Mom finding another unique door

spiral staircase leading to the upper rooms

hundreds of old sweaters lining all four walls - amazing

Some were worn out with holes in them.

back on the road - this is a typical roadway on the back roads in Norway - it is designed for two way traffic but is barely wide enough for one vehicle - if you pass another vehicle one will need to pull over to the side of the road to make passing possible.

Turid made us a wonderful picnic lunch

this old bridge across the Otreelva (this is the same river that runs in front of our apartment - just further up the valley - It has locks to allow the boats to pass through the change in elevation of the river

common sight - one must wait for the sheep to cross the road before proceeding

the dams in this part of Norway are all made of stones not cement as we are use to seeing

the woodwork on the outside of old homes is amazing to see - the patterns and designs are fascinating
