Røros

We recently had the opportunity to visit an old Norwegian village that gets transformed during the season from what used to be a sleepy little copper mining village to a bustling holiday Christmas community.  We took a 4 hour train ride from Oslo north to this tiny community in Eastern Norway close to the Swedish border.  The pictures are a little random but you will hopefully get a little idea of what we experienced on this trip.  The city was founded in 1600's. Good friends, Beautiful scenery made for some special memories.

Horse drawn sleds was a big attraction and a great way to see the town

fire pits by reindeer covered logs was a great way to warm up - Røros is typically one of the colder spots in southern Norway (it does get colder in towns above the artic circle)

one of the reindeer walking through the city streets  - taken from our restaurant window - also got some video on the streets a little later but again the videos are too large to put on the blog

city empties as quick as it fills once the shops close down (around 6p)

Ready to explore with some great friends - Berquists, friendly train conductor, Sister Hill, us, Robinsons, Pres. Hill

"Spark" - typical sled for getting around town with large items and snow - kids use them to sled the city streets after the shops close

evening is a magical time in these small communities

a few views of the countryside from the train - it passed through Hamar which was a I had the opportunity to work in a number of times since it was in my District in Oslo - about 2 hours outside of Oslo

some dancing children enjoying the day

Since we didn't have snow in the southern part of Norway the winter weather in Røros helped us get into the spirit of Christmas a little more

Santa always draws lots of attention
